DOOR
- All exterior doors should have good-quality deadbolt locks with no less than a 1-inch throw.
- Secure all latch-strike plates on the exterior doors with screws measuring at least 3 inches.
- Ensure that all exterior doors with glass 3 feet of glass installed have double-cylinder deadbolts installed on them. (Check with local authorities regarding laws concerning double cylinder deadbolts).
- Install a wide-angle door-viewer for identifying visitors in all exterior doors without glass.
- All exterior doors should be constructed of solid wood.
- Change the locks on all exterior doors upon moving into your home.
- Always lock all your doors when you are home for the night, or when you leave your residence.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING
The following precautions should be taken to maximize the security benefits of exterior lighting :-
- Ensure that the front entrance is lit well enough to enable you to identify visitors at night.
- Properly illuminate all other entrances.
- Use floodlights, or some other type of area illumination, to cover all exterior sections of your home and property.
- Use motion sensors to control your exterior lighting.
